Greetings Winter Warriors....
Not much going on here in Central Ohio, so one can kick back and watch a little TV. Even if you don't watch a lot of TV because you feel it is a waste of time, you might want to try "Downton Abbey" tonight at 9 p.m. on PBS. If you use wish to record this, at least the DirectTv guide (and likely other companies) has it labeled as "Masterpiece Theatre."
I am a recent fan of "Downton" because I couldn't find it on anywhere (for the aforesaid reason--why couldn't they call it "Downton Abbey?") I watched the DVDs of the first two seasons so I could catch up and not miss a juicy moment.
There are many facets to this jewel of a series-- Dame Maggie Smith plays a wonderful, sarcastic yet honest dowager dutchess. There are many new folks in the cast who will have long careers ahead of them. The story line weaves upper class and servants, with the plot usually fairly equally divided. There is humor intermingled with history and glamour as well has messy human relationships. Anyone thinking the early 1900s was a kinder, gentler time would be surprised!
It's finally time to tell Lord Grantham about a scandal that can "ruin" the family name and their eldest daughter Mary's reputation:
Lady Grantham- "Do you remember that Persian prince who stayed here last year?
Lord Grantham- "Madam, I assure you that I can be relied upon to recall the name of any of our guests found dead in their beds."
The scenery is lovely and much is filmed at Highclere Castle. Many sweeping views of the countryside give way to the beautifully furnished interior shots. The costumes are beautiful as well.
I think this show appeals to folks of most ages. It isn't at all stiff and stuffy like one might imagine a historical piece would be (and has been.) It is certainly not a documentary! I first heard of it last year while watching an award show and I believe they will be attending several more this year! I doubt they can maintain the plot many more years (like Mad Men, the time period is also a star.) So enjoy it while you can!
